In the September issue of Bustle & Sew Magazine we were delighted to feature an interview with the lovely Sophie of Moloneymakes. Based in Bristol, Sophie designs and creates gorgeous cosy knitwear items, crochet accessories and luxury homewares.
We asked Sophie how she got started. She told us;
“I started knitting in 2014 by way of a coping mechanism to deal with various mental health problems; I found solace in the meditative rhythm of the stitches and it helped my mind to quieten ever so slightly.
A couple of friends asked me to make them a headband and a beanie for the colder months which, to my delight, they loved so much that they said I should start charging for the items I was making, and why didn’t I get myself on Etsy? – Thus the birth of ‘operation Etsy Shop 2016’. I gave myself a year writing up my very own patterns, choosing my favourite yarn and perfecting my original range of items before officially launching ‘Moloneymakes’ in August 2016.”
Sophie also shared her advice for anyone wanting to start their own business…
“Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses and use that knowledge to your advantage. It’s okay to ask for help! Establish boundaries and don’t work yourself into the ground, I promise it is not worth it. Don’t play the comparison game – now this one is hard and I am very guilty of it, but remember that everyone comes with different circumstances And finally remember that it’s a race, not a sprint. Building a business takes a lot of effort and an awful lot of time. Don’t expect 100’s of sales in your first year. Don’t get me wrong, it’s entirely possible, but not necessarily probable. Be patient, work hard, stay positive and you will get there.”
You can find all of Sophie’s gorgeous creations in her Etsy shop, on Instagram and Facebook. Do pop over and say hello!
