I don’t know about you, but a countless number of Black Friday emails have found their way into my inbox over the last week or so, each one seeming to promise even larger discounts than the one before. I don’t “do” Black Friday here at Bustle & Sew as I prefer to keep my prices as low as possible the whole year round. I hate the thought that somebody could be priced out of such an enjoyable and creative pastime as stitching – which is why, although I’ve considered it, and my accountant has recommended it, I haven’t raised the price of the Bustle & Sew magazine for the last decade.
Black Dog Friday
So, instead of a Black Friday promotion this is in fact a Black Dog Friday promotion – and above are photos of the five very large black dogs with whom I’ve shared my life over the last (gasp!) twenty years.
At the top left, there’s Amy – my very first Newfoundland Dog. She came to me at six years of age, and shared my life for an all too short four years. She was the only dog I have ever known that loved to gaze admiringly at her reflection in shop windows as she walked along the high street! Next to her are Daisy and Ben, known as either the Dream Team or the Dreadful Duo depending on their behaviour at the time. They shared my home in Devon, living their best lives on the beaches of the South Hams.
Bottom left is Ted, my Covid pup, who lives with us here at Station House. He’s the largest Newfie I’ve owned, standing nearly 6ft tall on his hind legs, but is so gentle and loving (although very stubborn when he wants to be!). Finally there’s an upside down Auntie Ruby, an ex-brood bitch who came to us early last year. Although she’s quite an elderly lady she’s enjoying a second lease of life here in the Somerset countryside and loves bossing the other dogs around!
December Magazine
The final issue of 2025 is out tomorrow and is of course full of seasonal delights, including the last few Christmas projects, all of which are small enough to be completed before The Big Day. My favourite is definitely the little woodland animals who have leapt from last month’s hoop and are now mounted on vintage cotton reels carrying their Christmas gifts in their paws. We also discover the history behind both sequins and tinsel, stitch with metallic thread, read about the magic of mistletoe and much more besides.
