Meet the Maker 100th Issue Special: Emma Giacalone

Over the last 5 years we have been very lucky to feature some incredibly talented designer makers between our pages. In honour of our 100th issue some of our favourites have returned to share their advice for successfully running a small business…

Emma Giacalone creates beautifully stitched artwork, prints and textile items which she hopes will positively inspire you. Her embroideries are designed to spread a little happiness, motivate or simply make you smile.

We first featured Emma in Bustle & Sew Magazine in May 2017 and we wanted to know how her business has changed since then. She told us;

“When I was featured in 2017, I was doing a lot of commission work, often repeat makes and wasn’t and really wasn’t charging enough for what were very intricate one-off pieces. While I was always busy, I realised that if I continued to work in the same way, I would always be limited by the number of hours I had available. I also had lots of ideas for things I wanted to make and no time to make them, so at the beginning of 2018 I took a leap of faith, stopped taking on commissions, and gave myself permission to go away and create. Fortunately it was a gamble that paid off, and taking time to focus on making things I really enjoy shows through in my work.”

We also asked Emma if she had any words of wisdom for someone wanting to start their own business. Her advice is;

“Be bold – don’t be scared to give things a try. Have faith in yourself, in what you want to do and in where you want to go. If you are original and do what you love, it will always shine through in your work.”

Be sure to pop over to Emma’s website, you can also find her on Instagram too.
