In the December issue of Bustle & Sew Magazine we were delighted to feature an interview with the lovely Jess Hinsley. Jess grew up on the south coast of England but is currently living in a little (rather wonky!) cottage in Brecon, Wales. Jess is an illustrator and Typograhper and her illustrations explore her love of nature and characters. She uses a combination of imagination and reality to bring her stories to life. Jess uses gouache paints in a watercolour style, finishing off with colouring pencils to create texture and details in her whimsical illustrations. She often incorporates hand lettered typography into her work to create a fluidity throughout the images. As you can see, she loves rich, complimentary colours and quirky, cheerful characters, and all things of nature.
We asked Jess what’s the best thing about running your own business. She told us…
“Undoubtedly the freedom! I always knew I wanted to work for myself, I think partly because I don’t like being told what to do! But also I feel my most creative when I have freedom in my working practice. I love to be doing something different everyday, and I also love being able to take a few days off at short notice if I need to.”
We also asked her how she manages to keep herself motivated. Jess said;
“I’m so passionate about illustration that it’s quite unusual for me to be unmotivated, but it does happen! Particularly in the darker months when Christmas is over and the bleak early months set in. I find having something different to do everyday really helps, either having several projects on the go or taking an ‘inspiration day’ and going off into the great outdoors with my sketchbook!”
You can have a look at all of Jess’ gorgeous work over in her Etsy shop, or pop over and say hello on Facebook & Instagram!
